Myofascial Release is a form of manual therapy that reduces adhesions and restrictions amongst and between the fascial coverings of muscles and groups of muscles. ‘Myo’ refers to muscle, and ‘fascial’ refers to the ubiquitous connective tissue found throughout the human body. Hence ‘myofascial’ most closely represents the connective tissue within and surrounding the muscle. As opposed, for example, to the connective tissue surrounding organs or bones. A Myofascial Release session is typically focused on specific muscles or muscle groups with the intent of ‘individuating’ their movement. Through misuse, injury etc., muscle tissue often becomes glued to adjacent muscle and other structures which can restrict their range of motion, elasticity, fluid exchange and the like. Structural Integration incorporates many Myofascial Release techniques into it’s application.
